The Restoration of “The Cove”: A Success Story for the Flies-Only Section
In the heart of the legendary “Flies-Only” section of the Pere Marquette, a critical piece of river history has been saved. For years, the 1/4-mile peninsula known as The Cove was at a breaking point. Massive erosion was consuming the bank, threatening to cut off the river’s natural flow and burying over 50% of the stretch’s vital spawning gravel in sand.
Today, thanks to the unwavering support of the PMTU community, The Cove has been stabilized, restored, and protected.

Mission Accomplished: How We Saved the Peninsula
Working alongside the Conservation Resource Alliance (CRA), PMTU successfully executed a science-backed restoration plan that has fundamentally changed the health of this reach:
- Bank Stabilization: We installed 20-foot oak timbers and recessed root wads to lock the eroding bank in place. This “bio-engineering” stopped the collapse of the peninsula and prevented the river from bypassing a quarter-mile of prime habitat.
- Instant Habitat: These natural structures didn’t just stop the sand—they provided immediate overhead cover, creating new “homes” for resident trout in a stretch that previously lacked woody debris.
- Gravel Recovery: With the source of the sand blocked, the river’s natural current is now doing the work of scouring away silt, once again revealing the clean gravel beds necessary for wild brown trout, salmon, and steelhead spawning.

The Proof is in the Science
We didn’t just finish the construction and walk away. To measure the success of your donations, we launched a multi-year Brown Trout Redd Survey. By counting active spawning nests, we are tracking the biological recovery of the site. Our data already shows that as the gravel clears, the fish are returning to the very spots that were once buried in sand.
A Community-Powered Victory
The restoration of The Cove serves as a powerful reminder: the PMTU community gets things done. This project was fueled by:
- The Embrace a Stream Challenge: Where your individual contributions raised over $15,000.
- The Jac Ford Tribute: Which contributed $10,100 to honor a legend by protecting his favorite waters.
- Collaborative Spirit: Vital support from the PM Rod and Gun Club and the USFS.
What’s Next?
The Cove is a blueprint for what we can achieve across the entire watershed. While this specific bank is secure, the lessons learned and the momentum gained are being applied to our next set of habitat challenges on the Little South Branch and beyond.
Your continued support ensures that when a crisis like the erosion at The Cove arises, PMTU has the resources to step in and save the river before it’s too late.
