Mapping and Monitoring

Science in Action: Mapping and Monitoring

PMTU continues to prioritize science to inform its conservation efforts. Since 2020, the chapter:

  • Mapped approximately 60 miles of river for habitat characteristics.
  • Conducted single-pass electrofishing at 18 sites to survey fish populations.
  • Deployed 50+ temperature loggers (part of an ongoing multi-year study).
  • Monitored for Didymo (rock snot)—thankfully, no presence was found.
  • Initiated an inventory of dams in the Pere Marquette watershed
  • Began evaluating RSX fish passage

Additionally, the chapter partnered with Michigan Trout Unlimited to employ interns who completed critical habitat mapping and fish surveys in the Middle Branch, specifically from E 64th to Nelson.
