Empowering the Next Generation of River Stewards: The MITU Intern Program
The Pere Marquette is more than just a river; it is a complex, living ecosystem that requires constant vigilance and expert care. To ensure its protection, the Pere Marquette Chapter of Trout Unlimited (PMTU) proudly partners with Michigan Trout Unlimited (MITU) to fund and deploy Aquatic Science Interns—the boots-on-the-ground force keeping our waters cold, clean, and healthy.

Why Your Support for Interns Matters
When you support PMTU’s intern program, you aren’t just funding a summer job. You are investing in high-level scientific data and the future leaders of coldwater conservation. Our interns provide the essential manpower needed to execute projects that would otherwise be impossible for a volunteer-only organization.
With your help, our interns focus on three critical pillars:
1. Science-Driven Restoration
Our interns are the primary drivers of data collection. By conducting habitat mapping and fish population surveys, they identify the exact areas of the river that are most vulnerable. This data allows PMTU to prioritize restoration projects, ensuring every dollar we spend is used where the river needs it most.
2. Real-Time Protection
Through the deployment and maintenance of thermal loggers and water monitoring stations, interns track the “pulse” of the river. This information is vital for protecting trout during heat waves and monitoring for invasive threats like Didymo. Their vigilance provides the early warning system our fishery needs to thrive.
3. Community Connection & Education
Interns serve as ambassadors on the water. Whether they are educating river users on “Leave No Trace” principles or assisting with youth programs, they are cultivating a culture of stewardship. They help ensure that everyone who enjoys the PM understands their role in protecting it.

Help Us Keep the Momentum Going
The MITU Intern Program is a testament to what we can achieve when we prioritize science and education. However, these positions are only possible through the generosity of our members and donors.
By contributing to PMTU, you are putting a young conservationist on the water, gathering the data that saves fish, and protecting the wild character of the Pere Marquette for generations to come.
